You must have heard opposition politicians claiming Ethiopia as a one man rule. Yes, you heard them right. That is what they tell everyone in public.

But that doesn’t mean they believe in it. As a leaked Cable of US Embassy Addis Ababa, classified as ‘Confidential’, indicates otherwise.

Remarks by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, at the Funeral of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia

Good morning. First Lady Azeb Mesfin, President Girma, Acting Prime Minister Hailemariam, members of the Council of Ministers, members of Parliament, excellencies, distinguished guests, and the great people of Ethiopia – thank you for the privilege of speaking here today.

We gather to mark a profoundly sorrowful loss for Ethiopia, for Africa, and for the entire world. Our shared grief is palpable.

On behalf of President Obama, the United States government, and the American people, I wish to extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy for the untimely passing of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Our prayers are with the people of Ethiopia and, most especially, with Prime Minister Meles’s beloved wife, Azeb, and their cherished children, Semhal, Senay, and Marda.

Wikileaks: MELES ZENAWI ASKED US FOR INTEL | ETHIOPIA’S SOMALIA INTERVENTION 2006

Despite the repeated media claims that Ethiopia went to Somalia ‘to do America’s dirty job’, four leaked Cables of Nov. 2006 reveal that Addis Ababa had to ask for things even a mere US ally would take for granted.

The Cables also reveal that the Ethiopian acknowledged, back in 2006, that ‘Islamists will always be part of (the government of) Somalia’ and had held secret talks with the UIC (Union of Islamic Courts, aka CIC).

A Cable, dated Nov. 02, 2006, indicates that PM Meles Zenawi told US officials two days earlier that Ethiopia would be grateful if the US would help locate bases of al-Shebaab, an extremist element of UIC/CIC. He also asked them to lobby the Europeans and the UN so that they would not condemn Ethiopia’s actions. [This is about three weeks after he asked the US itself not condemn Ethiopia, if the latter deploys troops in a town controlled by the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia. WIKILEAKS: ANALYZING PM MELES ZENAWI’S PERSONALITY [FULL TEXT]

After working for about two years in Ethiopia, US Ambassador Donald Yamamoto felt ‘strongly confident’ in his ability to analyze Meles Zenawi’s personality.

The Ambassador wrote, in a leaked Cable of US Embassy Addis Ababa, dated March 27, 2009 and classified as ‘Secret’:

After scores of meetings with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Post has strong confidence in our ability to infer Meles’s Myers-Briggs type.

The methodology the Ambassador used, Myers-Briggs type Indicator (MBIT), was developed by Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs based on the influential theory of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung that is used to describe basic individual preferences and to explain similarities and differences between people. The main postulate of Jung’s theory is that people have inborn behavioral tendencies and preferences.
